Fallen Soldier: Nicholes D. Golding

Army sergeant Nicholes D. Golding, 24, of Addison, Maine, was assigned to C Company, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division based in Fort Drum, New York and served during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. On February 13, 2004, SGT Golding was killed in an anti-tank mine explosion in Ghanzni, Afghanistan.

SGT Golding enjoyed Army life but the easy position of driving a general’s jeep in Hawaii was not what Nick intended to do for his service in the military out of high school in 1998. He asked to be transferred into battle action and was given an assignment to Afghanistan leaving behind a pregnant wife and young son. He never got to see his daughter who was six months old when he was killed. SGT Golding was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart posthumously.

SGT Golding was a lover of the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad. “He was a great soldier and died believing in something greater than himself,” his son said. “But above everything, he was a great father.”

SGT Golding’s son is a Folds of Honor Scholarship recipient.
